Update July 2026
During June the interior was slowly refitted- and on 1 July the coffee shop opened. Still no sign outside, but the takeaway cups and Revolut payments say "Roots". The word was temporarily has been removed from the canopy, but a new one was fitted a couple of weeks later - photos coming soon.
Also, this shop, and Scón in Forster Street stayed open while others Roots cafes unexpected closed for good a few days later. It may be under new management.
Update May 2026
In early May 2026, Roots put up a sign saying they were closing for a few days for refurbihment. The whole inside was ripped out, and the Roots sign taken down.

In May 2021, Roots cafe chain took over Shop Street's most popular coffee-shop site from the short-lived Archies.
This site doesn't have a the space to support a full size Roots' Italian restaurant. Instead they're focussed on making excellent coffee, with a supporting range of cakes.
Open seven days a week, with outdoor seating only (including canopies for the hardiest cofffee-drinkers) Hours vary depending on season and demand. but roughly 9am to at least 6pm.
