Poppyseed at Galway Crystal

Update December 2025

After closing for the Christmas break at the end of December, Poppyseed announced on social media that they would not be re-opening any of their cafes, saying:

It is with a broken heart that we tell you that we will not be reopening Poppyseed.
After losing Anne, the link is forever broken and the glue that constantly kept us together is gone.

This follows the earlier announcement of the owner's death in mid October the same year:

Full text of the closure statement following the owner's death: It is with a broken heart that we tell you that we will not be reopening Poppyseed. After losing Anne, the link is forever broken and the glue that constantly kept us together is gone. As our logo said, 'more than just coffee....' that is what it was, thanks to the kindness and friendships that were built within Poppyseed. Hard to imagine that we won't be passing through these doors again but it was becoming increasingly harder each day to open and not see Anne there. We have been on auto pilot since Anne left us but the last few weeks the realisation has settled in and we have found ourselves physically, mentally and emotionally exhausted. We pushed grieving Anne aside to try and keep the business going but we have found it has caught up with us. Our staff, some not long with us, others we have watched grow up to the most amazing men and women, we are so proud of you. It has been a privilege to work alongside you all. Our community and customers, whose unwavering support had brought us through some of the most difficult times. We cannot thank you enough for going above and beyond when we needed you most. You were an extended part of our Poppyseed family. We will miss you all but we will forever keep the memories close to our hearts. It has been a pleasure serving you. Team Poppy

Originally

Poppyseed took over the cafe in the Galway Crystal showroom, Merlin Park, in mid 2019, when SALT closed abruptly.  Originally branded as Poppyseed@The Glass Factory, it rapidly became known as Poppyseed Galway Crystal.

The cafe is on the top-floor of the building, accessed via stately staircase, or a handy lift.   The all-indoor seating area is a lovely mix of light, airy and grand, and although the service area is just a little industrial-canteen style, this is made up for by the warm friendly staff.

Ample car-parking is available at the door, and in the large car-park at the back of the builiding.

A sister-business to the existing Poppyseed in Oranmore and Clarenbridge (which grew from the very original cafe in Eyre Street), they serve full Irish, omelettes and other traditional breakfast dishes, along with scones, pastries daily, and lighter dishes like granola and French toast.  The menu also includes a carvery which features roasts, as well as dishes like chicken curry, quiches, pasta dishes, and savoury pies. They have a selection of gourmet sandwiches with salad and chips, and burgers.

Open seven days a week:  9am to 5.00pm Mon to Sat, and from 10am Sundays / bank holidays (usually there are queues for a table by 11am each Sunday)

Address:    Dublin Road, Galway.
Phone:       (091 ) 795 191.
