Update
It's not clear when, but sometime in late 2024, The Captain started opening later in the day, and eventually just stopped opening at all.
Months later, it still looks the same outside, but still isn't open.

This eagerly-awaited second cafe in Doughiska opened on Thursday 18 July 2024, saying "We still have some work to do to get everything absolutely perfect but you have waited long enough" - and it was incredibly handy not having to queue for a seat.
They're located in the Doughiska Road Industrial Estate, next door to Spice Bazaar, in-between Tesco (previously Joyces / Centre) and the NCT centre / Galway East Primary Care Centre (and soon-to-be Mr Price!).
This unit was previously the occasionally-open Half Barrel bar - and The Captain has kept some of the original decor, while introducing some interesting lighting and artwork.
This is a new move into coffee for The Captain, who also runs a popular chipper in Westside.
The interior is cozy, with a couple of private corner tables, and a some with power sockets for laptops too.
To start with, they're open 8am - 6pm Mon-Fri, and 9am-5pm Sat/Sun, serving coffee, breakfast and sandwiches - with more to follow as they fine-tune what's needed.
The menu is still being developed, but a lot of work has been put into the coffee, which was fantastic the day we visited: great aroma, full-bodied with no hints of bitterness, and just the right crema.
