Beacon

This central-Salthill bar and restaurant opened in the second week of March 22025 - just in time for Paddy's Day.

They're in the purpose-built bar and kitchen, between Gourmet Tart and da Roberta which was most-recently Barnacles bar and restaurant. >  There's been some work on the fittings, removing features installed by the last owner, the the overall bar is much the same.

Beacon aims to be a fresh, stylish take on the classic gastro pub, "blend[ing] modern elegance with old-world charm, offering a warm nod to its stunning west coast surroundings."

The food menu, available from the 18th March, is described as "Asian-inspired", with offerings including Cantonese Clay Pots (choose from house-roasted duck, Chinese braised pork belly, Thai Bang Bang chicken), Beacon House Seafood Plate (with oysters, smoked salmon, and tiger prawns), Korean-style crispy chicken burger with kimchi, roast Peking duck with plum sauce.   And for the more traditional Irish palate, braised lamb shank is also available.

Barnacles Bar and Kitchen

Update

Barnacles closed in mid-September 2024, posting on social media:
After two wonderful years serving the vibrant Salthill community, we've made the difficult decision to close our doors for the final time on Sunday 15th September.

We're incredibly grateful for the unforgettable memories and the loyal visitors who made Barnacles more than just a bar. To our amazing team, thank you for your dedication and for creating something special every single day.

While this chapter is coming to a close, we're focusing on moving forward with positivity.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for everything.

Mark and Conor

Barnacles Bar and Kitchen opened in central Salthill in late October 2022, in the premises which was most-recently R. M McCabe's Gastropub, next-door to Da Roberta's Italian restaurant.

It's run by a business partnership who have operated seafood restaurants in County Clare and beyond. Their opening menu aims to be seasonal, featuring local produce and seafood, with a roast-dinner offering on Sundays, and a children's menu.

Drinks on offer include all the standard range expected range, and with "prohibition-style" cocktails featuring spirits from the local Micil Distillery.

The decoration inside aims to look like a traditional Irish pub, with some interesting twists including a Library Bar.

Open from Wednesday thru Sunday, 12-noon until "late," with last food orders at 9pm.

Pizza Max

Pizza Max Salthill is in the middle of Salthill village - in between Paddy Power and the Laundrette, in the unit which was Canton Kitchen Chinese restaurant prior to March 2020 / Covid-19.

They're part of a chain, with pizza stores in Roscommon, Dublin, Cork, Enfield and more - now including Galway, where they opened in early June 2021.

The menu is pretty much what you expect from a cheap-and-cheerful pizza place:   Pizza, burgers, kebabs and sides, spice-bag, Ben and Jerry's for desserts, and a kids menu.   There are a good range of meal-deals, and pizza sizes range from 10-inch to 16-inch.

You can order online or follow them on Facebook (the whole company, not just Salthill branch).

SPAR Salthill

SPAR Salthill convenience store opened in May 2021, run by Killoran's Retail Group.

It's the first local shop in this spot, located across the road from the seafront, between Colm's Amusements and Coco Cafe, in the unit which was previously the Full Duck restaurant, and before that Wildes.  Effectively it's just around the corner from Salthill Garda Station.

The store has all the departments with a seaside Spar should have, featuring a self-service coffee dock, bakery section, full-service delicatessen and an off-licence.  There is an ATM machine just outside the front door.   The area has very limited parking, but there's a large council-owned car-park across the road (keep an eye out for closed signs if the tide is going to be especially high).

The shopfront isn't particularly aesthetically appealing, but that's more than made up for by having newspapers and a reasonably priced deli items available so close to Salthill park.

Kali Coffee Bar

This brave little cafe i sat the top of Salthil village (in the former hairdresser, next to O'Connor's bakery.

They opened at the very start of January 2021, right in the middle of a pretty strict Level 5 lockdown.   Despite this, there have been queues outside.

Their menu is a little different form most:  you can have coffee (or not-coffee if tea is your think), made with or without milk.

Lots of nice touches for dog-lovers and their canine companions, and some interesting decor too.

Open Tues - Sunday.

Mocha Beans Salthill Promenade and Maude's Icecreams

Update: as at mid-2014, this is still a cafe, but no longer part of the Mocha Beans chain. It is now known as The Creamery.

This lovely light-filled location is home to a branch of Galway's Mocha Beans chain.

The food and coffee is everything we expect from Mocha - always changing, but high quality. The cheery orange look of Maude's icecreams adds to the general verve of the place, and it's a lovely spot to sip a coffee on a cold-yet-sunny winter day.

Location:  Salthill Promenade.
