Street Dog

Galway's first specialist hot-dog restaurant put their signs up on the10th of April 2025, and opened for business a couple of weeks later in early May.

They're located in Cross Street, in between Nora's Gin Bar and Cavavin Wine Store - in the premises which was previously Pizza Amore.   It's had some work done (removing the pizza oven, but leaving the classic blue and white tiles in place) - and a brash red and yellow paint job to really make the place stand out.  The on-street outdoor dining area is still there, too.

The menu is based around hot-dogs and chips.   The dogs have lots of varieties (classic, street, bacon, peppi, spicy - and even veggie).   Chips feature the Irish classic garlic/cheese and curry, as well as hot-dog inspired sausage, bacon and spicy-beef options.   They also have dog-bowl options (think hot-dog minus the bun).  Toppings including cabbage, carrots, onions, pico de gallo, jalepneos, sweetcorn, onions, cheese (cheddar or parmesan), sour cream, curry, bacon, pepperoni, spicy bolognese.

To accompany your meal, there's a good range of soft drinks, and also beer and wine,  on-tap and bottled.

Open seven days a week, hours are to be advised.

Lil Bros Pizza

Dough Bros pizzas opened their newest pizza shop on Friday 21 March 2025.

Cutely-named Lil' Bros is located at the north West corner of Eyre Square, near the Lally Tours information kiosk , where Rooster's Cafes used to be.

Unlike their earlier restaurants )in the former pro-cathedral in Middle Street, and in the outdoor dining area of O'Connell's bar) which blend nicely into their surrounds, Li'l Bros is a bolds statement in green, white and gold-ish-orange, with in-your-face signs to let everyone known that this is THE PLACE to come for pizza.

This is mainly a takeaway pizza place, but there is some some outdoor dining space.   The did have some seating upstairs too - to be seen if this is still open or not.

The opening menu is small and simple:  pizza by the "NY slice", a few dips and add-ons, cold drinks,  - and merchandise:  Dough Bros teeshirt, hoodies and more.   Pizza squares and sambos are promised to be coming "soon". but for now it's simply great pizza for the slice.

Opening days/ h ours - to be advised.

Aryan Pizzeria, Abbeygate Street

This optimistic pizzeria opened in late May 2024, initially in “trial mode” and accepting cash only but by the June bank holiday weekend everything was working fully

They're located at 20 Abbeygate Street Lower, next-door to BakeBox, in a restaurant which was most-recently home to the unfortunately-named Tummy Time. This time around it's only had a small refurbishment with a more open seating area and some interesting wall-displays making for more attractive interior.

The menu is simple: Pizza, including all the usual favourites (Margherita, Hawaiian, peperoni, meat-lover, American-hot), with a plus version of the peperoni and a bacon-lover pizza as well. Burgers (beef, double-beef, beef with special sauce, chicken, veggie), and sides including tacos, curry-cheese, garlic-cheese, chicken goujons and nuggets, BBQ and spicy wings, garlic mushrooms and mozzarella sticks. Cod and chips, falafel, and green salads are also available.   And over time they've added more Turkish items and specials.

Initial hours were early afternoon until 8pm, but this was rapidly extended, and they now open quite late into the evening (10pm and later).

Available via Deliveroo, as well as for collection and dine-in (inside dining only).

Charcoal Grill, Quay Street

This very-central branch of Galway's favourite burgers and kebabs show opened in the first week of May 2024, just in time for the bank-holiday weekend.

They're in a heritage building located at 7 Quay Street, which was the previous home to Ember Firehouse and before that the short-lived Galway Oyster Bar, and before Covid was Riordan's traditional restaurant.   This is in between Heart In Hands jewellers and the incredibly popular Xi'an Chinese restaurant - and around the corner from the original Charcoal Grill which closed in late-ish 2023.

There's some outdoor seating where you can be right in thick of Quay Street, and probably some more upstairs too.   The outdoor area has brand new "walls" and a new retractable canopy, too.  Downstairs the colour scheme is TCG's classic bright red and dark green, but they've kept the interesting paint job upstairs.

Menu is the classic dishes that they do best:   kebabs, wraps, burgers and chips.

Open seven days a week,  from lunchtime until late.

No social media yet.

Opening weekend - everything is bright and shiny new

A few days before opening:  the classic TCG sign is up, but the delivery bicycle are still filling the outside area

Smash Bird

This lurid flouro-pink takeaway chicken-and-more shop is casting Dominick Street in a whole new light. Nestled in between the classy Plámás coffee-shop and the down-to-earth Giovanni's chipper, they are an eye-catching addition to Galway's West End, with premises designed by Galway artist, Tracey Moca.

Officially opened on 1 November 2023, the doors were open the weekend before at least to tease Halloween visitors to the city.

Located in Lower Dominick Street, in the same place where Roost used to be, this fast-food store is taking chicken to new levels - in the spirit of Birdhouse and Dawghouse (which just happen to be run by the same people.

The menu features burgers (mostly buttermilk fried chicken, with one beef option, chicken wings and popcorn-chicken options, "dawgs" (hotdogs) and vegan "junk" which means Brassica Burger, Dirty Secret, Dominick-Trix Dawg, The Stray, Creole Corn, and Miso Maple corn.   There are also some interesting-sounding sides (french-fries, tater hashers, halloumi fries, disco fries, garlic-butter parmesan fries, tagarashi fried, cabbage fritter, Asian slaw and pickles).  And sauces offering all these flavours and more.

Hours to start with

Wed-Thurs,  5 - 10pm

Fri-Sun, 5pm - midnight

Order on-line for collection

Tasty Toasty

The Tasty Toasty trailer opened during the third week of May 2023.

For now, at least, they're in Market Street in the driveway the new Portershed innovation centre (in the former Connacht Tribune office) and Kozzy's barber shop.  To start with, it's strictly a takeaway operation, although there is some public seating a little down the road near the main gate to St Nicholas church.

They're open Monday to Saturday, serving toasted sandwiches from 11am until they run out, and drinks + treats until 4:30pm.

The opening menu is simple:
  • Drinks:  coffee (espresso, americano, flat-white, latte, cappucino) tea, water or Coke Zero
  • Toasted sandwiches (triple cheese, slow-roasted ham, Gubbeen chorizzo, and creamy buffalo chicken)
  • Treats:  chips and dip (salsa, buffalo or garlic), and a baked sweet treat, eg brownies

With a focus on freshness and quality, local suppliers include Calendar Coffee from Oughterard, Sheridan's Cheese and Moycullen Meats.

Prátaí, Shop Street

After a busy start in High Street, Prátaí, Ireland's own take on the gourmet-chipper, moved up the road to Shop Street - opening auspiciously on St Patrick's Day, 17 March  2023.

The building they're now is is called Thimble Castle - small, but probably 4 times the space they had in High Street.  This building was home to butcher's shop for a long time, and since has been a fish-and-chip shop, and a variety of cafes - most-recently Churrio Nation.    It's next-door to Roots Cafe, and beside St Nicholas church.  The outside of has had a paint job, except for the balloons mural, which has so far survived the eagle-eyes of city officials as well as the weather.

The menu is the same:  proper Irish chips, locally sauced (if not sourced!).  You choose size (big, bigger, biggest), a sauces (Harry's nut butter, Drummond House garlic aoili, market curry mayo, bad-boy burger sauce or white truffle kewpie mayo), seasoning (Irish sea salt or chicken salt), and an optional garnish (diced white onion, diced jalapeno or parmesan) - and they do the rest.

Named after the Irish-language word for potato, it's pronounced pray-tee, and written with a couple of fada's, ie Prátaí not Pratai.

Opening days / hours are to be confirmed - but it's likely to be a seven-days-a-week operation.

Later in March, with the signs working

Pizza and Pasta Napoli

This unassuming Italian restaurant is found in Cross Street, tucked into a small shop/kitchen unit between Tigh Neachtains pub and 2 Wild Geese design/giftstore - near the top of Kirwan's Lane.

Don't be fooled by the lack of pretension.  The food you'll fine here is genuine Italian pizza and pasta dishes - they describe it as real Italian food, made by real Italian people.  It's always fresh:  given how busy they are it has to be.   And they sell pizza by the slice, for a reasonable price.

They've also had Pizza Amore, an indoor dining restaurant further along the street - but that hasn't re-opened since the Covid-19 closedowns.   But they were busy during the recovery in 2020 / 21, helping places which done food before to install pizza ovens and serve up delicious €9 treats.

There are a couple of tables inside, but this is mostly a takeaway / outdoor dining kind of place.   The surrounding buildings  provide shelter from the wind, and there's a canopy to keep the rain off too. The decor is an interesting mix:  an American 1960s Coca Cola + waitress sign outside, with blue and white mediterranean tiles covering the walls inside.

Most years, they close for a month or two in January / February, to give the staff a chance to relax and visit family. No need to put up signs - everyone in Galway knows that when the weather warms up, they'll be back again!

Bella's

Update

Mid October 2024:  Bella's is gone, the bright red paint job has been toned down, and the place is re-opening under new management "soon".

Originally

Bella's Takeaway in 17 Dominick Street Upper opened in late November 2021, after applying a bright tomato red paint job to the premises vacated by Vinnies - and giving the staff bright green uniforms so they really stick out.

Serving a wide range of late-night favourites: pizza (including the lesser-spotted Julia), burgers, kebabs, chips - and even wraps, they open at 4pm and stay that way until late.

Pizza Max

Pizza Max Salthill is in the middle of Salthill village - in between Paddy Power and the Laundrette, in the unit which was Canton Kitchen Chinese restaurant prior to March 2020 / Covid-19.

They're part of a chain, with pizza stores in Roscommon, Dublin, Cork, Enfield and more - now including Galway, where they opened in early June 2021.

The menu is pretty much what you expect from a cheap-and-cheerful pizza place:   Pizza, burgers, kebabs and sides, spice-bag, Ben and Jerry's for desserts, and a kids menu.   There are a good range of meal-deals, and pizza sizes range from 10-inch to 16-inch.

You can order online or follow them on Facebook (the whole company, not just Salthill branch).

Bangin' Noodles

Despite the dodgy name, the 1 April official launch date and the underwhelming on-street presence, Bangin' Noodles really is a new restaurant in Galway city, offering imaginative noodle-based creations - on a takeaway basis for now.

Describing themselves as
"an underground pop-up restaurant"
"a Pot Noodle on Magic Mushrooms"
they're based in St Augustine Street, using in the basement premises which was (is?  will still be?  who knows!)  De Burgos bar and club - next door to scout den, and underneath the Vincent de Paul offices.

If you drive by, you might spot their banner handing on the railings

Red street banner #SendNoodez advertising new restaurant

You might even spot a cryptic sticker in a strategic location around the city.    But poke your head around the corner in Augustine Street, and there they are at the bottom of the stairs.

The opening menu includes gems like spicy Birria, green-Thai curry, sweet-potato Massa, with beef or chicken.

Hours were Thursday - Sunday, 4-8pm when they first opened - but more like 12-noon to 9pm now.

See the menu on their clickandcollection.com pages, or find it thru their Insta feed.
