Beacon

This central-Salthill bar and restaurant opened in the second week of March 22025 - just in time for Paddy's Day.

They're in the purpose-built bar and kitchen, between Gourmet Tart and da Roberta which was most-recently Barnacles bar and restaurant. >  There's been some work on the fittings, removing features installed by the last owner, the the overall bar is much the same.

Beacon aims to be a fresh, stylish take on the classic gastro pub, "blend[ing] modern elegance with old-world charm, offering a warm nod to its stunning west coast surroundings."

The food menu, available from the 18th March, is described as "Asian-inspired", with offerings including Cantonese Clay Pots (choose from house-roasted duck, Chinese braised pork belly, Thai Bang Bang chicken), Beacon House Seafood Plate (with oysters, smoked salmon, and tiger prawns), Korean-style crispy chicken burger with kimchi, roast Peking duck with plum sauce.   And for the more traditional Irish palate, braised lamb shank is also available.

Taquila

This brand new authentic Mexican taco and cocktails restaurant opened in central Galway in the 2nd week of October, 2024.

Owned by a hands-on Irish / Mexican familyand complete with a head chef recruited directly from from Mexico, Taquila is a big step up from other Mexican casual dining restaurants in the city. They are 100% authentic, with no soggy tex-Mex or cumin in sight.

They're located on the corner of Daly's Place (Woodquay) and Eglinton Street, in a building that has a long casual-dining history as Eddie Rockets / Rocking Joe's / Shake Dog, and more recently Wishbone.

The basic shape of the interior is the same, but the outside has been brightened up with a dark pink paint job that really stands out next to Roscoe's cafe. McSwiggans is just around the corner, and Brasserie on the Corner is immediately across the road is: this really is a neighbourhood where excellent-Mexican dining will fit right in.

The opening menu includes two traditional dishes for sharing (barbcoa and a traditional traditional burrito basket for 4, with sides including sauteed onions, Mexican rice, refried beans, guacamole, and grilled spicy chillies. The two desserts have a more international flavour (strawberries and cream with baileys, chocolate fondant). Tacos come in six options, including a fish, veggie-ajillo and the very traditional tacos al-pastor with spit roasted Mexican pork, and chicken Ambrere. There's also a big focus on cocktains,. with popular offerings including the inevitable margarit, the Xxx Daisy, a spicy margarita, the Jungle Bird, Flor de Jamaica and Los Muertos.

Over time they plan to offer more traditional Mexican dishes, eg Fideo Mexican noodles, Cochinita Pibil slow roasted pork in lime), sharing platters, nachos, mini quesadillas, churros and more.

Opening hours to start with:
Mon - Wed: 5pm - 10pm
Thurs - Sun: 12-noon to 10pm.
