Ground and Co, Crown Square

Galway's newest Ground & Co café opened on Wednesday 20 May, 2026.

A very welcome additional to the cafe's in the east side of Galway city, it's in the ground floor of the brand-new Two Crown Square building, on the corner of Monivea and Joyce's Roads.  The unit has ample seating, great natural light from floor-to-ceiling windows, wooden furniture, and a calming, muted-green colour-scheme which compliments the bright signs and yellow neon "howya loveen" decoration.   There's also a nice plaza area, which will hopefully have outdoor seating when the sun starts coming out more often.

External signs are limited:  From the Monivea Road side, you'd be forgiven for not seeing the cafe at all.  But this cafe is professionally run, and right beside the Radisson Red hotel and future City Council offices, across the road from the GRETB training centre and IDA Business Park, and on the edge of Mervue and Wellpark - it's going to be busy.

The brunch menu (including porridge, granola, french toast, avo-toast and of course a fry) is served until 12-noon, and lunch after that.  There's also a nice range of slices, cakes, energy balls, overnight oats, with space to add more.  The coffee menu has all the essentials, plus matcha and chai latte.  And there's a nice range of cold drinks ranging from iced-coffees, kombucha to Wild Orchid juices.

Roots Mervue

The well-known Roots cafe group opened their first Galway-city suburban location in Mervue shops on Monday 1 December 2025.

Despite signs which call it a "Cafe / Bistro), this is a very small outlet serving takeaway only. It's at the far right hand side of the Mervue shops, next door to Hair Flair and then Vincents: It was previously home to Coffee+, which closed a short time earlier.

The menu is small, to suit the size of the kitchen, and includes great coffee, a small range of sandwiches, smoothies and sweet treats.

Dunelm

UK-based Dunelm home-furnishing retailer took over the Irish Home Focus @ Hickeys chain in late 2024, and in mid October 2025, the Wellpark store was rebranded.

This shop is located in between Petmania and Boots the Chemists - at the back of the block where the g-Hotel is.

As with the previous management, a large focus of this store is made-to-measure curtains and blinds - but a range of soft furnishings and linens are available in-store.  An introductory offer of 20% off curtains, roman blinds and accessories is available from 17 October.

FlyeFit , Wellpark

FlyeFit opened their first Galway-city gym on 22 March 2025.

They're located in Wellpark, in the basement of the building that's home to Eye Cinema, just south of the G-Hotel.   This space was previously home to iRadio, but has been empty for some time.

The gym entrance is from the shopping centre's underground carpark:  if you're  a pedestrian, you can either use the travellator beside Dino's Barbershop or the lift opposite the entrance to Lidl Wellpark.  And if you drive - the parking is free and there's plenty of it.

Aiming to offer "low cost, high-quality, self-service supergyms", this is a BIG exercise space with lots of equipment and lots of windows - thankfully darkened so that not everyone going past can see you working out.   There are several special studios, including a yoga and Pilates space, and a heated polar chamber.   Gym equipment is from Hammer Strength, Gymleco and Concept - among others.

Membership is by the month (no contracts), and classes, including ass & abs, yoga, pilates, dancehit,  HYROX intense, high energy workouts are included at no extra charge.

Esquires, Wellpark

Opened in mid-April 2024, and officially launched in the las week of April, Esquires Coffee Wellpark is a full-service day-time cafe located in Wellpark shopping centre, next to the carpark entrance to the  g Hotel, and near Eye Cinema.

They're in Units 13 and 14 , which was previously home to the G-Cafe, and just down from ShakeDog.   The cafe and kitchen have had their decor refreshed, but still has the high ceilings, plenty of seating, including outdoor space for smokers and others who like fresh air or views of the carpark.

This is a busy modern cafe, with the menu on an app and kiosks just inside the door - but there's still a traditional counter with staff who are more than happy to take your order and cash, and well-trained waiting staff who deliver orders to the table and keep the dining area well looked after.   

The menu includes breakfast (served until 12-noon) and lunch, with interesting salads, signature sandwiches and generous portions of delicious cakes.

Open 8:30am to 5pm Monday to Saturday, and 9am to 5pm on Sundays and bank holidays.

Dinos Barber Wellpark

Dino's Barber Shop opened in Wellpark Retail Centre on 5 December.

Newly decorated with a dark, black-and-dark-brown theme, they're in Unit 11, which was, a long time ago, a small cafe next to Maplin - and is now just across the car-park from Woodies.

They're looking to be a high-class, destination barbers-shop which makes grooming easy and enjoyable for men, offering a confidence boost, not just a haircut.

Lidl Wellpark

Galway's newest supermarket, Lidl Wellpark, opened on Thursday  12 November 2020.

It's located at the south east corner of the G-hotel / Wellpark shopping complex, in a unit which was previously a very spacious PC World store.

As  a supermarket, it's more spacious than the Lidl on the Headford Rd, has a good range of their products, but lacks the spacious feel of the purpose-built Lidl store in Doughiska.   But it's well-placed, in a neighbourhood which was lacking in supermarkets before now.

There are lifts to the underground parking area in the complex - unfortunately they're accessed from across the road in the Pet Mania building, but at least there is a marked pedestrian crossing and a covered waiting area.
