Galway pub re-openings after Covid-19

In March 2020, many businesses in Ireland were closed in response to the Covid-19 pandemic.  

The notes below have information about when each pub re-opened.

See pubs in Galway which were open for a list of public houses that are no longer open.





Covid-19 and Irish pubs - and overview

June? - August 2020 - outdoor service only 

August - October 2020 - indoor dining was allowed, under strict conditions including table service only, and everyone had to buy a substantial meal (defined as one costing at least €9)

27 October - 3 December - takeaway  service only.

From 4-24 December 2020, pubs and restaurants were allowed to serve indoors

From 24 December 2020 (Christmas Eve) pubs were only allowed to serve on a takeaway or delivery basis - 

From 7 June 2021, they are allowed to open for outdoor dining and/or drinking.   

From ?   until January 2022, indoor service was allowed for people with vaccine or recovery certificates

From January 2022, no restrictions were applied.

1520 in Quay Street

Re-opened on 29 June 2020
Closing from Wednesday 7 October until 3 December 2020.
Opened from 4-24 December 2020.

Opened for takeaway food and drinks from 30 April 2021.










An Púcán in Forster Street

Re-opened on 29 June 2020.
From 7 October, serving takeaway food and for limited seating in the beer garden. 
From 21 October, closed.
Re-opened, with a much-improved colour scheme, form Friday 4 - 24 December 2020.

Re-opened for takeaway food and drinks from 30 April 2021.







Aras na nGael in Dominick Street

Open for outdoor dining in the week started 17 June 2021





Barr an Chaladh in Woodquay

Re-opened on 20 July 2020.
From 7 October- closed.
Planned to re-open from 4 December 2020, however they were not able to do so due issues with the control of the kitchen.

Re-opened for outdoor "dining" from 7 June 2021, with a "beer garden" in the street in front of the pub, which is now closed to through traffic northbound.

Bierhaus in Henry  Street

Reopened on 3 July 2020.
Open from Wednesday to Sunday with sittings at 5pm and 8pm for tables of 4 to 6 people only. Booking on Facebook, with bierhausgalway on Instagram or email bierhausgalway@gmail.com
From 7 October- closed.
Open from 4 - 23 December 2020. Groups of 4-6 people only, sittings at 5, 7 and 9pm. 

Opening at weekends for takeaway bottled beer and a limited food menu, from 12 March 2021.



 






The Blue Note

Re-opened on Friday 4 September,  from 5pm.  Open Friday to Sunday only, serving pizza and salads, from the kitchen in their sister pub, Massimo.

From 7 October- limited seating only, but tickets through Eventbrite.

From 22 October, an off-licence selection of craft beers was available for click-and-collect, and growlers (craft beer jugs) were filled.
From 4-23 December 2020, open for meals.   Closed for January and most of February.   

Re-opened for craft beers sales (growlers and cans) from late February 2021.







Brasserie On The Corner

Re-opened on 29 June 2020
From 7 October- did a trial of food delivery for one weekend,  but are now closed until normal service is allowed again.
Open from 4-23  December 2020. 

Re-open for indoor dining only on 26 July 2021.

Buddha Bar in Mary Street 

Reopened Monday 29 June 2020
From Wednesday 8 October, offering takeaway/ delivery only.

Bunch of Grapes in High Street

Reopened on 21 September 2020
From 7 October- closed.   
Once outdoor dining was allowed in 2021, their outdoor space was used by the High Cafe.

Re-opened for indoor and outdoor drinking from 26 July 2021.

Busker Browne's Bar and Kirby's Restaurant in Cross St

Re-opened on Monday 29 June.
From 7 October open for limited outdoor dining on the first week,  but subsequently closed.

Open for dine-in from 4-23 December 2020.

Re-open for takeaway drinks from late May 2021.











Caribou in Woodquay

Reopened for call-and-collect takeaway food / drink from 8 May 2020

Open for full service from July.

From 7 October, delivering through @whatsfordinner.ie from 4-9pm Wednesday - Sunday, and opened for outdoor dining.

From 16 October, closed.

Open for indoor food and drinks on Friday 4th of December.  Closed from 23 December. 

Re-opened for takeaway food/drinks at weekends from April 2021







Carrolls / The Crust Bucket on Dominick Street

Opened on 20 July 2020

From 7 October,  limited seating available in the beer garden. 

From 21 October, closed.

From 4 December open.








The Cellar Bar in Eglinton Street

Re-opened on 29 June 2020. Email info@thecellar.ie to make a reservation.
From 7 October, open for takeaway food, drinks & coffee from 12-9pm daily.
Open for dine-in from 4-24 December 2020.  Then closed

Re-opened for indoor dining / drinking only, from 26 July 2021.

Coyotes / The Stock Exchange - in Shop Street

Reopened on 23 July.   Open daily, from 6pm, serving pizza.
Closing from Wednesday 7 October.

Re-opened on Friday 4 December.

The Crane in Sea Rd 

Opened on 31 August 2020, serving Pizza Woozza
From 7 October- closed.

Open for outdoor "dining" in the Small Crane from 7 June 2021








Crowes in Bohermore

Reopened on 22 July.
Hours 5-9pm Thursday to Friday, and 2-9pm Saturday and Sunday. 

From Wednesday 7 October open for takeaway food, and operating an off-license, Thursday through Saturday.  









The Dáil Bar and Liquor Lounge in Cross / Middle Street

Reopened as a restaurant in late July 2020.  During September, they made use of footpath space, with pedestrians using the roadway in Cross Steeet which was temporarily pedestrianised.

From Wednesday 7 October, open for limited outdoor dining.

From 21 October, closed.

D'Arcys in Forster Street 

Reopened on Friday 24 July.  Hours 2pm - 10pm daily, serving pizza from Pizza Pasta Napoli.

Closed from Wednesday 7 October.

Have not yet made an announcement themselves, but Pizza Pasta Amore say they are re-opening their kitchen in D'Arcy's on 4 December.





The Dew Drop Inn in Mainguard Street 

Reopened on 20 August ... read more 

Open for takeaway and limited outdoor seating from Wednesday 7 October.

From 21 October, closed.

Have announced that they will be open for "Dew Drop To Go" only from 4 December.










Fibber McGees in Eyre Square

Re-opened on 24 August.  Their food menu features three different types of pizza.
From 7 October- closed. 

Open for indoor drinking only from 26 July 2021.











Freeneys on High Street

Reopened on 21 September 2020
From 7 October- closed, for three weeks at this stage, although the whiskey and fishing supplies shop is open weekdays.
From 21 October- fully closed.

From 26 July 2021, re-opened for indoor and limited outdoor drinking.









Garavan's in William Street

Re-opened on 17 August 2020.  Lunch from 11:30am (soup and sandwiches from Espresso 44), dinner from Tucos Tacqueria is available 5pm is, last orders 9pm.

From 7 October- closed.
Offered takeaway hot beverages service from Friday 4 - 24 December, open from 12 - 9pm daily.

Re-opened for takeaway drinks from Friday 30 April 2021.


Harry's in Bohermore

Open for order and collect food and cocktails from 1 May 2020
From 7 October, open for takeaway and very limited outdoor seating. 
From 21 October - takeaway only.








Hughes Bar in Woodquay

Reopened on Monday 21 September at 11am- link - and now planning to open at 11am daily (12:30pm  on Sunday).

From 7 October- closed. 

Re-opened for limited outdoor drinking (back yard and in front of the pub) from 23 July 2021 - just before Race Week.   Open for indoor drinking from Monday 26 July.

Reopened on 27 July
Closed from Wednesday 8 October.
Open from 4-23 December  2020- with new canopies and outdoor heaters at the Cross Street entrances.

Reopened on 9 July 2020.
From 7 October- closed.

Hole in the Wall in Eyre Street / PJ Fahy and Son

Reopening at 4pm  on Monday 21 September 2020, features include a brand new cocktail bar.

From 7 October- closed. 









Hyde Gin Bar in Forster Street

Reopened on  1 July 2020.
From 7 October, closed, except for residents of the Forster Court Hotel. 
Open for brunch every day from 4-23 December 2020. Then closed.

John Keogh's in Dominick Street

Re-opened on 29 June
Closed from Wednesday 7 October,
Opening from 4-23 December 2020 for dinner from 4pm daily.  Then closed

Open for outdoor dining in the street in front from early July 2021.

Kennedys Bar in Eyre Square 

After a food-less, false-start on 27 July - they re-opened on Monday 21st September 2020.
From 7 October- closed.

Jury's Inn

Re-opened on 29 June (possibly only for residents).
Closing from Wednesday 7 October - except for residents.
Opened to non-residents for outdoor dining / drinking from 7 June 2021.





Killorans in Salthill 

Reopened on 22 September 2020 - then from 7 October- closed. 
Re-opened in October 2021, when indoor service was allowed.






The Kings Head in High St

Reopened at 12-noon on Thursday 2 July   for lunch and dinner.
From 7 October- closed. 
Open for lunch and dinner from Friday December 4-2 December.

Re-opened for indoor (and very limited outdoor) dining in from 26 July 2021.







Lonergans Atlantic Bar in Salthill

Reopened in September September 2020.
From 7 October- closed. 
Re-opened for outdoor "dining" from June 2021.





Massimo in William St West

Re-opened from 29 June 2020
Open for takeaway and limited outdoor seating from Wednesday 7 October.
From 21 October, closed.
Open from  December 4-23, with Christmas themed areas (Winter Wonderland and Gingerbread house).   






McBrides in Dominick Street 

Reopened as a gastro-pub on 22 July. 
Open Wednesday to Sunday, sittings at 3 dining slots available each evening: 5.30pm, 7.30pm and 9.30pm.  Bookings, email info@monroes.ie or phone (086) 044 7301. 
Closed from Wednesday 8 October.

Open for in-door dining from 4-24 December 2020.  Then closed.







McGettigans on Prospect Hill

Reopened 29 June 2020,  
Closed from Wednesday 7 October.
Open from 4 December to 23 Decembe 2020.
Open for takeaway cocktails and drinks from 17 June 2021





McGinns Hop House

Re-opened on Monday 29 June at 4pm as a restaurant.

Closed from Wednesday 8 October.

Re-opened for takeway service on 27 May 20201, and for outdoor dining from 7 June 2021.






McSwiggans in Woodquay 

The bar re-opened on 22 July at 3pm.
From 7 October- closed. 

From 4-23 December - open for dine-in.
Open for outdoor dining, using seating in the middle of Woodquay, from 7 June 2021.





Merchant's Bar - in Eyre Square Hotel, Forster Street

Reopened in mid-July 2020.
From 7 October- closed
Opened for dine in from 4-23 December 2020.






Monroes in Dominick Street

Selling takeaway pints along with meals, and are also running a dial-a-pint van service, from mid-May.  
Reopening for in-bar food and drink from Monday 20 July 2020.  Closed from Wednesday 8 October.
Re-opening from Friday December 4th - 24 December.

Re-opened for takeaway food and drinks from 29 April 2021.   Dial-a-pint van service also resumed.











Murty Rabbits in Forster St 

Reopened at 5pm on Monday 29 June.
Regular hours from 1 July will be 2pm until the last booking at 9:30pm (so 11pm  closing).

From 3 October,  opening the Garden only from 3pn.

Nova in Sea Rd

Reopened on 13 August 2020 , with food from the neighbouring  Greens & Co restaurant.
Walk ins are welcome but capacity is restricted so booking are highly recommended. Book by WhatsApp Messaging them on  085-2064645.
Closed from 7 October. 

Re-opened from 26 July 2021, for indoor dining/drinking only.






O'Connells in Eyre Square 

Reopened in July 2020, with food from  Dough Bro's Pizza and Handsome Burger.
From 7 October 2020, closed.

Announced in early 2021 that they would would not re-open until later in the year, due to urgently needed building work.

Eventually re-opened on 10 December 2021, following major work on the foundations.

The Ol' 55 / Tigh Mossy on Prospect Hill 

Reopened in the week starting 21 September 2020. 
From 7 October- closed.

Re-opened for outdoor "dining" from 17 June 2021.








The Oslo in Salthill

Re-opened for takeaway beers and burgers from 21 May 2020.
Reopened as a restaurant from the end of June. 

From 7 October  serving food and drink in a refurbished outdoor area.  Opening Hours: Thurs- Sun: 12pm - 11pm.  

From 21 October, closed.

Re-opened for dine-in from 4-24 December - book by emailing Oslo@galwaybaybrewery.com 

From Friday 12 March 2021 - re-opening for takeaway food and craft beers / cocktails.







O'Reillys Bar and Kitchen in Salthill 

Re-opened from 29 June - 6 October, 2020. Then closed.   
Have announced that they will not be reopening during December 2020 Christmas period.

Re-opened for outdoor dining in the week starting 7 June 2021.

The Western in Prospect Hill

Re-opening to guests on 29 June 2020
Closed from Wednesday 7 October except for residents who are being served in their rooms only. 

Open more widely for guests from early July 2021.   Open properly from 17/7/2021.

Offering outdoor dining in the beer garden at the rear of the hotel, or in limited seating at the front.













The Quays in Quay Street

Re-opened on 28 July 2020.

From 7 October- closed.
Open for dine-in from 4-23 December 2021.
Re-open for outdoor drinking from 7 June 2021.







Richardson's in Prospect Hill 

The off-licence was open for a few hours each week from approximately June - and takeaway pints are also available.   This has continued throughout December, and into 2021 during the Level 5 restrictions.








The Salt House in Raven's Tce 

Reopened at 1pm on Monday 21 September 2020.
From 7 October- closed.

Re-opening for to-go growlers and cans, from 3pm on Friday 12 March 2021:   no pints, no drinking outside within 100m of the pub.






PJ Flaherty's in Lower Salthill 

Open from 10 August, serving food from Siam Street Kitchen and others.

From 7 October  serving food and drink in a refurbished outdoor area. 

From 21 October, closed. 






R M McCabes in Salthill

Roisin Dubh - bar and live music venue in Dominick Street

Reopened on Tuesday 9 September 2020 - serving burgers from Iconic Catering.   Open from 
6pm Tuesday - Thursday, 5pm Friday - Saturday and 12-noon on Sunday.

Open from Wednesday 7 October -open but with very limited seating in the garden, for three weeks at this stage.

From 21 October, closed.








Sally Longs in Upper Abbeygate Street

Re-opened on 14 August 2020.
From 7 October- closed. 
Announced that they would not be re-opening in early December 2020.







Seven Bar in Bridge Street

Open for takeaway food, coffee and drinks.

From 4-23 December 2020, open for eat-in customers from 12 noon:  limited reservations Monday-Thursday, Walks-ins only Friday-Sunday.

Re-opened for takeaway drinks from Thurs-Sun, on 27 May 2021, and for outdoor dining and drinking from 7 June 2021.







The Sliding Rock in Newcastle Rd

Reopened on 29 June 2020.  Bookings being taken now.
Closed from Wednesday 7 October.

Open 4-23 December 2022.

The Skeffington Arms ("The Skef")

Reopened on 29 June at 12-noon.
From 7 October, limited outdoor service.
From 21 October, closed.

From 12 November, open for call-and-collect cocktails from 4-7pm, Fridays and Saturdays only. Open for indoor dining from 4-24 December 2020.

Re-opened for takeaway drinks and BBQ from early May 2021.






Taaffes in High St 

Re-opening on Thursday 23 July at 12-noon, with a new menu.  Book by phoning  091-564066. 

Open from 4th  until 3pm on 24 December 2020

Have announced that they will be open for outdoor drinking and dining from 7 June 2021.








Taylor's Bar in Dominick Street 

Reopened at 5pm on 20 July, offering chicken dinners from Roost
From 7 October, limited outdoor seating 
From 21 October, closed.
Open for dine-in Friday 4-23 December 2020.

Reopened on Thursday 16 July.
From Wednesday 8 October,  open with newly covered outdoor seating.

Tigh Choili in Mainguard Street

Re-opened on 4 August 2020.

Open for takeaway and limited outdoor seating from Wednesday 7 October - for three weeks at this stage.  Closed from 21 October.

From 4-24 December, offering a takeaway "Hot Drink Menu, roughly from noon until 9pm.

From 30 April 2021, open for takeaway hot-dogs, and a summer drinks menu.   Open for outdoor dining (hot dogs again!) and drinks from 7 June 2021.








Tom Sheridan's in Knocknacarra

 Reopened on the 29th June.

From 7 October, serving in the covered outdoor seating area - open for drinks from 1pm and food from 5pm today. Booking is essential by ringing us in advance.  Takeaway food and drinks menu available for pick-up also -phone order in advance.  Call them on (091) 525315 to arrange 

Temporarily closed from 21 October.

Planning to re-open from Friday 4 December.




Trappers Inn on the Tuam Road 

Reopened on 20 July 2020, initially daytime hours only

From 22 October, offering takeaway food and pints.







The Universal cocktail bar in William Street West 

Reopened in the week starting 29 June 2020,

From 7 October open with limited seating outside. 
From 21 October, open for takeaway only takeaway food and booze, Tuesday to Saturday.
Open for dinner from 4-23 December.   

Open for takeaway food and wine sales, Wed - Sat, 12-4pm (ish) from January 2021.   Added takeaway pints to the menu from late May, and open for outdoor dining and drinking from 7 June 2021.







Wards in Lower Salthill

Open from late July 2020
