The Hidden, Riverside

This suburban but very authentic pan-Asian restaurant and takeaway opened on Sat 2 December 2023.

They're located at 38 Gleannanail Drive:  this is right inside Riverside housing estate, in the premises that was most recently Scran Riverside cafe, and sometime before that was a neighbourhood / convenience shop and newsagent.

They offer a full eat-in and takeaway menu, with lunch served from 12.30pm  to 3pm, and dinner from 5pm to 10:30pm.

The menu is divided into:

• "Asian bites" (starters), including satay skewers, deep-fried squid, piri-piri prawns, crispy chicken, wontons, gyozas (Japanese dumpling), spring-rolls
• Soups - including Tom Yam, Won ton, Chong Qing Hot Sour, and tofu miso.
• Noodle soups, including Korean kimchi noodles, Japanese ramen, won ton, Tom Yam - and curry Laksa.
• Fried Noodles (pad Thai, Yakisoba, Singapore, udon, Indonesian mee goreng mamak, chow mein and Penang char keuy tow)
• Fried rices (traditional, Nasi goreng, Sambal and Thai pineapple king prawn
• Other wok and curry dishes (satay stir fry, black-bean stir-fry, Kung-po stir-fry, black-pepper stir-fry, Mongolian stir-fry, Honk Kong style sweet and sour, roast cashews stir-fry, Oyster stir-fry, Thai red curry, Thai green curry, Bangkok peanut curry - and regular homemade curry.

China Town

China Town  Asian Cuisine Restaurant & Takeaway opened in early / mid May 2024.

They're located in Dominick Street, in the restaurant that was previously Tomo's Asian Streetfoods - in between John Keogh's gastro-pub and the late night convenience store known only as  No 26.

The menu includes a range of fried noodle and fried-rice dishes, as well as a range of Asian curries and signature dishes.   They've got a range of specials, eg snack box, party box, spicy box - as well as some surprises. 

Open 5pm to- 12 midnight,  Tuesday-Sunday.

Mama Rich Flavours of Asia, Woodquay

In the days BC (Before Covid!) Papa Rich was a group of Asian restaurants with outlets in Newtonsmith (Born), Woodquay, Headford Rd, Salthill, and even Briarhill for a while.  They had an excellent reputation offering quality Asian restaurant and takeaway dishes.   They opened when they could through the Covid time, but as always, life moves on.  As at mid-March 2024, the Salthill restaurant is open and Tir Nog (Headford Rd) is an express / takeaway.

And in Woodquay - Mama has taken over!  Officially from the first week of March 2024 when the new signs went up, located upstairs from Barr an Chaladh (formerly O'Toole' bar) - you'll find the restaurant entry through the door at the left side of the pub.

The decor is better than ever, and so is the menu, with a range of standard dishes and menu specials which showcase a wide range of Asian cuisine.  The restaurant is efficiently run, by an owner who really knows hospitality and is passionate about making people welcome in a cozy setting and serving unique tastes of Asia.    Delivery service is also available - order through their website.

Spice Bazaar

Dublin-based Spice Bazaar Asian supermarket opened their first Galway shop on Wednesday 23 Aug 2023.

The store is in Doughiska, in the previous Foodland premises in a side road just south of Merlin Woods Industrial Estate, in between Copacabana Tanning Studio and the Half Barrel Bar.

They're stocking a very wide range of  Indian, Filipino and African foods, including fresh fruit and vegetables, confectionary, packaged and frozen goods.  Staples come in regular sizes packages for home use, as well as catering sizes.   There's an extremely wide range of spices, also in a variety of useful sizes.   And it's not open yet, but it looks like a butchery or deli-counter is planned for one end of the store.   As well as foods, there are cosmetics and kitchenware.

Open from 10am to 8pm, Monday to Sunday.

Carnival Supermarket, Eyre Street

This bulk-foods and Asian specialist grocery store opened in Eyre Street, up the hill from Woodquay, in early April 2022.

They've got a range of rices, and many refrigerated goods too. The display shelving is basic to start with.

The shop they were in was Bon Cafe for a brief time about ten years ago, and has mostly been empty since then.  It's in between Eyre Street Stores men's outfitters, and the soon-to-be-closed inner city Yourell's Hair Salon

Lana Galway city

Lana Thai Asian Street Food opened a restaurant in Galway city-centre in the 2nd weekend of October 2021.

They're located in St Mary Street, in between Amber holistic giftstore, and the Rikshaw Chinese takeaway.   The unit they're in has known by a number of names:  Mediterranean takeaway, Jerusalem - and others that will be added as I remember them.    Lana have done a very thorough renovation, so will hopefully be successful here.

There are clearly separate restaurant and takeaway areas, the former is compact, but well-lit and cheerful.

The menu is extensive, including a range of vegan dishes and a kids-menu.
