Pizza and Pasta Napoli

This unassuming Italian restaurant is found in Cross Street, tucked into a small shop/kitchen unit between Tigh Neachtains pub and 2 Wild Geese design/giftstore - near the top of Kirwan's Lane.

Don't be fooled by the lack of pretension.  The food you'll fine here is genuine Italian pizza and pasta dishes - they describe it as real Italian food, made by real Italian people.  It's always fresh:  given how busy they are it has to be.   And they sell pizza by the slice, for a reasonable price.

They've also had Pizza Amore, an indoor dining restaurant further along the street - but that hasn't re-opened since the Covid-19 closedowns.   But they were busy during the recovery in 2020 / 21, helping places which done food before to install pizza ovens and serve up delicious €9 treats.

There are a couple of tables inside, but this is mostly a takeaway / outdoor dining kind of place.   The surrounding buildings  provide shelter from the wind, and there's a canopy to keep the rain off too. The decor is an interesting mix:  an American 1960s Coca Cola + waitress sign outside, with blue and white mediterranean tiles covering the walls inside.

Most years, they close for a month or two in January / February, to give the staff a chance to relax and visit family. No need to put up signs - everyone in Galway knows that when the weather warms up, they'll be back again!

Gatto Rosso - Eyre Square

This new-to-Galway Italian restaurant is located in the Georgian houses at the west end of Eyre Square, next to the Skeffington Arms hotel, in the unit which was previously a Spar shop.

It opened in June 2021, during the outdoor-dining-only period following the Covid-19 level 5 closedown - but there's plenty of indoor dining space too.

The menu is everything you'd expect:  pizza, pasta and more, and the vibe is cheerful and welcoming - bringing a welcoming dining option to this side of the city-centre, close to the bus and train stations.

Address  25 Eyre Square

June 2024, new outdoor furniture gives a better view of the park.

Cafe Venice / Venice Cafe Restorante

Update:  Venice moved to their current location in Abbeygate St  near the top of Middle Street during 2017.  The new restaurant is far more spacious, so easy to get a table in, and following Covid they even have outdoor dining in the side yard during summer.

Same contact details,  now at 11 Lower Abbeygate Street.

The look and feel of a back-street Italian café, set in the back streets of Galway city.

Opened in mid 2011, in the site of the former Trisha's.  Initially very quiet, but a few excellent reviews on TripAdvisor meant that tourists started finding it.

Unlike Trisha, the Italian lads don't like early mornings, so don't be looking for for a fry at 8am.   There is a great range of Italian options during the day, and in the evening they switch to a dinner menu and stay open as long as the customers keep coming.

Italian food, nicely done in a small, friendly environment.   The tables are very close together, so it's not the place to have intimate conversations.   Stylish, but not pretentious about it, at realistic prices.

Also a nice nice spot for a coffee during the day.
